Biography
Sally Jessy Raphael hosted her own radio call-in, advice show for six years (1981-87) on NBC's Talknet, and for three years on ABC radio. In 1992, she was honored by the National Association of Radio Talk Show Hosts as Talk Show Host of the Year, having already received an Emmy" for Outstanding Talk Show Host in 1989.
Before launching her signature talk show on October 17, 1983, Raphael worked as a radio and television broadcaster in 24 cities -- and was fired eighteen times. She tried out for 142 commercial voice-overs -- and never landed one, but as you know things got better.
Her award winning television talk show was on for years and syndicated in many countries.
The show aired in 180 world markets. With her signature red-framed glasses, Sally Jessy Raphael cracked the daytime TV talk show market in 1983, hosting a show which bore her name and was syndicated by Phil Donahue's distributor, Multimedia. Raphael was second to Donahue in making a name for herself with the audience participation talk show format Donahue had pioneered.
Sally and husband Karl are also avid adventurers who travel to remote locales. "We have been known to clear a weekend, walk into an airport and ask for the next flight out," says Sally. She loves going where she is not recognized as a celebrity, although that field is quickly narrowing. Favorite recent vacations include Christmas in the Cook Islands, riding elephants at Tiger Tops, Nepal, and two safari's through Africa. Karl and Sally traditionally spend their summer vacation in a different city each year in Europe, inviting friends and staff members to visit. The couple now have a place in Nice, France and love it almost as much as NYC.
Raphael's fame brought her occasional cameos as herself in films, such as "Resident Alien" (1990) and "The Addams Family" (1991), as well as in the TV-movie "Fatal Flaw" (ABC, 1989). In 1996, Raphael made her TV acting debut playing a judge who sternly sentences a murderous Fred Savage in "No One Would Tell" (NBC). She has branched out to producing with the 1997 CBS TV-movie "Ken Follett's 'The Third Twin'".
Raphael now enjoys family and her art hobby and the couple enjoy their home in Nice and frequently take advantage of the non-stop service between NYC and Nice, France.
