Biography
I began my writing career with articles for my local newspaper—no money, but lots of glory. The first article for which I was paid appeared in Medical Laboratory Observer, a magazine for laboratory professionals. When the editor called to say they wanted to publish it, I had the presence of mind to suggest another article possibility. I probably caught him off guard, because he agreed and gave me my second sale.
My husband and I then moved to Barrow, Alaska. When I called the editor of the local weekly (who was 500 miles away in Anchorage) to complain about the lack of local news, she said, “That’s because there’s no one up there to write it. You can to write some?” This time I was the one caught of guard, so I said, “Sure.” “Fine,” she said. “You want to take pictures? I’ll send you some film.”
So we became photojournalists. (My husband Frederic Moras was already a photographer.) It was a great excuse to run around town, ask nosy questions and turn in stories on snowy owls, whaling crews and ice golf tournaments. Some of the material found its way into articles for The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska Magazine and Alaska Geographic. We also produced a guidebook, “Barrow, Alaska From A to Z”—the first and at this moment that only guidebook on the northernmost town in the U.S. I also wrote and published “Tacos on the Tundra,” the biography of eccentric Barrow resident Fran Tate, owner of the world’s northernmost Mexican restaurant.
We continued our white-collar migrant worker lifestyle, living and working in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. Although I continued to submit queries and be published, my success rate improved after our move to New Mexico in 1997. I now contribute regularly to New Mexico Magazine, New Mexico Journey (AAA), and the New Mexico Business Journal. My work appears from time to time in Broadband House, Ceramics Monthly, Home & Away, American Profile and I Love Cats.
